Decline of Play Among Preschoolers

Think Global: The Washington Post reported that a rise in sensory issues among the under-7 crowd may be linked to a reduction in active free play outdoors.

Meaningful play has been usurped by academic, adult-led activities for many young children.  Then when issues arise, adults try to fix things by teaching special skills like specialized breathing and coping skills.  Prevention of these problems includes lots more free play time for younger children, especially outdoors.

Act Local:  What’s happening on your block?

  1. Is there anyone for your kids to play with outside, right now?
  2. How often do you see kids playing in parks in kid-directed activities?
  3. How much driving time and money does your family devote to organized activities for your child?
  4. Post a comment below and join the conversation.
