Mindfulness, along with emotional intelligence, resilience, and social-emotional learning, are big buzz terms in today’s world–and for good reason. Adolescents are in an especially opportune period of development to make use of the benefits of mindfulness. This presentation examines mindfulness as an approach to helping teens become internally stronger and more balanced as they face increasing demands and a pace of life that don’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. Along with experiencing some brief mindfulness practices throughout the presentation, participants will be provided with a brief summary of the research on mindfulness, how research suggests it changes the brain for greater resilience, and how schools and families alike can consider mindfulness-based approaches in working toward less frenzy and more calm for teens.
This free event is open to the public and will begin at noon Nov. 30 at the Community Consolidated School District 93 at 230 Covington Drive in Bloomingdale.
Dr. Brenda Nelson has 28 years of experience in the mental health and education fields, including work in hospitals, two Chicago suburban high schools, and in a private psychotherapy practice She has presented both locally and nationally about teens and mindfulness.
